The Perfect Mix

Do you remember the story of Goldilocks?  Not too hot, not too cold, just right.  Not too hard, not too soft, just right.  And so on.

Amongst your connections on social media, I am sure that you have some who are fond of posting memes showing that socialism is doomed for failure.  The message seems to be that if everyone just works hard, they will succeed, and no government assistance will be required.

You also have some people in your circle that have joined the chorus of those promoting socialism as the cure for all the injustices in the world.  They point out the folly of have more money than you can spend in a lifetime.  Capitalism is driven by greed, whereas socialism is the only route for a caring society.

It seems to me that each group thinks that their latest post is powerful enough to shut down the other side.  And between the lines, one can read a tone that sounds like, “Put that in your pipe and smoke it.”

Indeed, profit seeking left unattended is unlikely to be fully considerate of others.  Do you think that the tobacco companies woke up one day and, out of the goodness of their hearts, decided that they should warn their customers that their product is unhealthy?

Well, if you keep scrolling, you will find some socialist friends are fond of saying, that Canada is a rich country so we can surely afford x and y and z – and I should have started earlier in the alphabet because the list does go on at length.  But to be a rich country in the first place, Canada must have some rich people.  But if outlaw rich people – well, you see where this is going.

Would this approach work?  Canada should have as much socialism as possible.  Those programs should be funded by for-profit enterprises and people.  All the while, subject to the constraints of a balanced budget and a reasonable tax burden.

Not too hot, not too cold.  Not too hard, not too soft.  It should be just right.
